To the kind messages of sympathy

already reported are to be added one from the Governor-

-General of Indo-China who sent his condolences and those

of the French Colonies and Protectorates in a letter to

the French Consul here and referred to the vast commercial

transactions between Hongkong and Indo-China and one from

Rear-Admiral Truppel who in a letter to me expressed his

own deep sympathy and that of the German Protectorate of

Kiouchow with Hongkong in its misfortune.
